Does the self-employment status apply to novel writers or does their contract with the publication company make them not considered this? I don't think all novel writers have contracts though, do they? Lots of information would be greatly appreciated. In what cases are writers not considered self-employed?
if you write for someone(a paper, a magazine etc) where you are employed as an employee, that is what you are and your writing belongs to the employer
if you are an independent contractor and you sell your writing(even if it is something that was requested i.e. a specific topic etc) you should have a contract in which all facets of your work, pay schedule ownership of writing etc should be spelled out
as an independent contractor you will probably report on a Sch. C however, there will be occasions that royalties(from the sale of the writings) over a long period of time will be on Sch E
If you don't have a contract, you are not doing yourself any favors.
